Annie's (beautiful) eyes

Since she was born, Annie's eyes have attracted a lot of attention.  The nurses in the NICU were always going on about how bright and big they were and strangers often stop us to comment on their beautiful shape and color (thank you daddy and Nana).  It is interesting now that her eyes are taking center stage in a little different way.  

 

Nana and I just got back from seeing the pediatric ophthalmologist with the kidos.  As I mentioned in earlier posts, Annie and Eli both had been diagnosed with ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity), Annie Stage 2 and Eli stage 1.  They were both followed by a doctor in Indiana during our time there.  Today was the 9 month follow up appointment for all 3.  Eli's ROP has resolved totally (yippee) and he and Mikie both have perfect vision.  They will not be seen again until they are 3.  

 

Annie's ROP has also resolved but unfortunately has left her with severe hyperopathy.  In adults this is commonly known as "farsightedness" but when the condition develops in infancy, as is Annie's case, it effects both near and distant vision.  Her's is the most severe stage and without immediate correction it would result in permanent brain and vision damage - the part of her brain responsible for vision would never be able to recognize "clear" images.  While we have known that this was a possibility for her it still catches us a bit off guard.  Fortunately the treatment at this age is glasses - no surgery...yet.  For that we are grateful!  

 

So tomorrow we head back to the Dr to get her fitted for glasses.  Should be interesting...especially since at the tender age of 1 day old she managed to free her hands and pull off her protective goggles in the NICU (she did this over and over and over).  To this day she HATES wearing her sunglasses!!!
